The vacuum-capable nanoindenter from ASMEC is based on the design principle of the normal measuring head of the UNAT. It consists of a device for the measurement of normal forces and displacements which can be mounted in the vacuum chamber of a scanning electron microscope, as well as the appropriate electronics and software. Using this nanoindenter the deformation processes during an experiment can directly be observed with high resolution.

Special LVDTs (inductive displacement transducers) are used as sensors for the force and displacement measurement. The force is generated by a piezoelectric element and measured by the deflection of springs.

It is possible to stop an experiment for image acquisition using a special pause function and to continue the programmed measuring process afterwards. During the pause force or displacement are further controlled.

Different indenter types can be used by means of adapters:

  •     commercial diamond tips from different manufacturers and device types
  •     Any solid materials, for example in the form of spheres with diameters up to 5 mm.

The instrument works in compressive and tensile mode, i.e. it can also be used as a micro tensile tester.
